POW/MIA

John Clark Hurst

Killed in Action, Body Not Recovered

POW/MIA
This American Hero has not returned home.
Bring Him home...we owe Him so much more.

Because I wear the POW/MIA bracelet of John Clark Hurst I am curious about his personal life and military history. Who was this man that gave his life in service to my country? Where was he born? Where did he grow up? Who was his family and who did he leave behind? Whose memory does he live on in, besides mine?

Upon further research I found there was an organization established for adopting POW/MIA's whose remains have never been recovered . The participants in this organization called Operation Just Cause are working towards a full recovery of those who were/are lost to us during the Vietnam Era (1965-1975).

A Note from the Virtual Wall:

On 13 July 1968 Capt John C. Hurst, pilot, and 1st Lt Leonard A. Bird, radar intercept officer, of VMFA-115 at Chu Lai, were conducting a close air support mission about 10 miles south of Khe Sanh in F-4B BuNo 150650.

The F-4 was hit by ground fire during its second pass at the target, burst into flames, and crashed before either crewman could escape the aircraft.

Because the aircraft was under observation from the time it was hit until ground impact the two men were declared killed in action. Their bodies have not been recovered.
