    • BERT AND PAMELA (ROES) NELSON

      Bert was born on September 8,1960 to Syd and Kathy Nelson. He grew up on the family farm near Hillview in Paddock Township. Bert graduated from Sebeka school in 1979 where he was active in football, wrestling, FFA and baseball. He was also very active in 4-H where he won numerous state and national trips and awards.

      Bert went on to college in Fergus Falls (two years) and St. Cloud State one year). in the summer of 1983, he came back to farm with his dad and uncle Max Nelson. He married Pamela Roes on September 29, 1984.

      Pamela was born on March 13, 1962 to Paul and Dorothy Roes. She grew up in Butler Township. Pam graduated from New York Mills in 1980 where she was active in track and band. Pam went to college in Fergus Falls (two years) and Wadena Tech (one year).

      In the spring of 1983, she began work in Fergus Falls as a payroll secretary for a clothing factory. She quit when she married Bert and went into farming with him. Terrance Emil was born on June 30,1985 and Adrianne Rose was born on September 24, 1986.

      In the spring of 1987, the Nelson's moved to the cities after the farming operation entered the dairy buyout program. Bert worked as a sewer construction worker in the cities with his cousin.

      After being laid off in the winter of 1987 and realizing the city life wasn't for his family, Bert found work at Lund Boats in New York Mills.

      The Nelsons bought a house near Mills. Pam found part-time work at the Mills Elevator in the fall of 1989 as a bookkeeper.

      After the death of Pam's sister Barb, on June 25, 1990, Pam's niece Margaret Sara Roes came to live with the family. Margaret was legally adopted by Bert and Pam on May 31, 1991.

      Bert went to Wadena Tech for a year of advertising classes and graduated in May 1991. He immediately started working at Wadena Pioneer Journal. He is currently the advertising manager.

      Pam quit her job at the elevator in October of 1991 to stay home with the children. She is currently the secretary of her bowling league and president of the Christian Mothers group of her church. She is also a part-time organist.

      Bert is now the treasurer of Homestead Township and the secretary of the Lions Club in New York Mills.
