    • "Alex, the youngest of the Schwarz family, was quite a pet of his sisters. He and I were of the same age, so we attended St. Mary's Grade School and Chilton High together. (We were both good students, although I did not like mathematics.)

"Alex spent considerable time with cousins on nearby farms. They were mostly girls, so he had quite a bit of female influence in his life. He learned to be quite a cook at home. In those day's 'cooking' was quite an art! Short-cuts were not in vogue.

"In our high school classes, Alex was chummy with the girls.

"Uncle Schwarz was careful in handling money, and his family was well provided for. He bought them the best in pianos. It was one of Alex's talents to be a good pianist. After reading the notes for a time, he soon knew the selections by memory.

"He had a cousin, Hugo Michels, who was about his age. He seemed to admire and imitate him. When at U.W. - Madison, they carried the same subjects, botany and chemistry, among others. Alex taught for a time, I'm told, at Memphis University. I heard that he did research work for ten years.

"I think Leonard was an influence to him during those years; a great help, too. (Not till recently did I ever hear that Alex was ill somehow, in a cast for a time.)

"There was a farewell party one evening, as Alex was entering a new line of work. It was an outdoor 'farewell party' with Japanese style decorations. After the party, a storm came up and Alex, barefoot, went out. He's said to have stepped on a live-wire and was electrocuted.
